How Nice to Be a Pelican

Yet another pelican piece. This one is an 8×10 oil on gesso board.

I really need to get back to my illustrating and stories, but I was recently on vacation and there were a few reference photos that I just HAD to paint. This guy lives at Seal Beach in California. What a life! Perching there and watching the waves roll in and crash. I bet this guy hardly knows a moment’s stress.

I’d like to send a thank you to the guys at SVS Learn. As I was taking the pelican’s photo I waited specifically for the whiteness of the wave to be directly behind him, making him the area of the piece with the most contrast. AND he’s strategically placed in the composition. See guys, I’m paying attention.
